Seaside

About

For our second SCYP partnership, we had the good fortune to work with the City of Seaside from 2017-2019. During this time, as with the Salinas partnership, a number of classes across campus partnered with the city to address sustainability-related items critical to the Seaside. A few items of note.

    1. The new city manager for the City of Seaside, Mr. Craig Malin, contacted Dr. Fernandez because he had heard of the project and wanted to be a part of it.  Word of our program had gotten to a wider audience because we had an event to give the SCYP program more visibility, in collaboration with the international EPIC-N program.  Our campus President and Provost attended this event and it was supported by Dr. Jessica Barlow from San Diego State and Dr. Laura Bloch, from EPA Region IX.

    2. One of our graduate students participated as a student in a GIS class with Seaside. She later taught an undergraduate version of this class several times and partnered with the city to help them address some of their needs. She was also hired by the city to help them develop their GIS capabilities and she became one of the liaisons for our students to work with. When she graduated in 2019, she earned the first graduate student award for exemplary achievement!

    3. One of our faculty who teaches in journalism had her class help spread the word to the community about a competitive support opportunity available to assist new small businesses with funding. The city was concerned they would have no, or few, applicants. As a result of this class, the city had 10 applications, two of which were in Spanish, which the city encouraged but did not expect. It heightened significantly the engagement of the small business community as to the opportunities and support available to it from the City of Seaside.
